Acceptable
medical sources are individuals who have the training and
expertise to provide us with the signs and laboratory findings
based on medically acceptable clinical and laboratory diagnostic
techniques that establish the existence of a medically determinable
physical or mental impairment. Licensed or certified
school psychologists, or licensed or certified individuals
with other titles who perform the same function as a school
psychologist in a school setting, are acceptable medical
sources for establishing the existence of mental retardation,
learning disabilities, and borderline intellectual functioning.
Licensed podiatrists are acceptable medical sources for
impairments of the foot and ankle. Qualified speech-language
pathologists who are licensed by the State professional
licensing agency, or are fully certified by their State’s
education agency, or who hold a Certificate of Clinical
Competence for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
are acceptable medical sources.
